Dr. Brian Russell is joining Tallahassee Neurological Clinic after more than three decades of experience in neurosurgery, including 20 years in Springfield, Illinois, and the past 10 years practicing in Thomasville, Georgia. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to providing compassionate, patient-centered care while offering the latest advances in neurosurgical treatment.
Born and raised in a small town in southern Illinois, Dr. Russell initially dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player. His career path changed after entering college, where he developed a passion for psychology and neuroscience. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with an emphasis in neurobiology before counseling emotionally disturbed adolescents at a clinic in Minnesota. He later attended Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, completing medical school in just three years. During his training, he conducted research on spinal cord pain receptors and completed a rotation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Russell completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of Kansas, where he trained for six years under Dr. Paul O’Boynick and Dr. Charles Brackett. Following residency, he returned to Springfield, Illinois, to join his former mentor, Dr. Don Pearson, in private practice. During his 20-year career there, he served as Chief of Neurosurgery at both Memorial Hospital and St. John’s Hospital. He also held an appointment as Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, where he helped develop the institution’s skull base surgery program.
During his time in Thomasville, Dr. Russell introduced several advanced neurosurgical techniques to the community. He performed the region’s first cervical artificial disc replacement, pioneered minimally invasive craniotomy procedures, introduced minimally invasive spine surgery, and continues to perform Gamma Knife radiosurgery.
Dr. Russell is experienced in all aspects of cranial and spinal neurosurgery, with particular interests in:
- Minimally invasive spine surgery
- Cranial surgery
- Peripheral nerve surgery
- Cervical artificial disc replacement
- Skull base surgery
- Gamma Knife radiosurgery
What Dr. Russell enjoys most about medicine is the lasting relationship he builds with each of his patients. Even years after treatment, former patients and their families continue to reach out for medical advice or simply to reconnect, a testament to the trust and personal connections he has developed throughout his career.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Russell enjoys spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He and his wife have four grown children and seven grandchildren spread throughout the Midwest. They also share a love for their bird dog, Duke, who his wife trains and spoils. Although his career has taken him across the country, Dr. Russell remains a small-town boy at heart and looks forward to serving patients in the Tallahassee community.
